Would some kind oppo be willing to run a vin for my roommate? Very low mileage car with some issues one wouldn’t expect to see yet, I think it’s a good deal but he’s understandably suspicious since we discovered the speedometer and thus the odometer don’t actually work. Seller says that “just started a month ago” umhmmmmm...

Thank you!

Motosnoop says it’s all clear, but doesn’t report mileage at all during the registrations on it. ( http://motosnoop.com/ it takes a bit to process through but it’ll give you basically the AutoCheck report for free).

Though to be honest with you, it’s a 19 year old Taurus, does it matter if it has an extra 50k miles on it? I can’t imagine your buddy is paying much for a 19 year old Taurus.

Normally I would agree, I think it matters when it only shows 50k on the odometer.

no problem always happy to help with those, not that it was very detailed.

It does say it has 5 owners. If it only shows 50k on the odometer it’s very, very, very wrong. There’s no way a very common normal every day driver like a Taurus passes through 5 people (and was actively registered the whole time btw) and doesn’t hit 100k miles.

I’d inspect the living CRAP out of that car if it’s only showing 50k. Sounds like the seller is hiding something, this is a red flag that something else weird could be going on.

The 5 owners jumped out at me too! Seller claims it was granny’s car, can you at least come up with something original? That said, it's the cleanest damn Taurus I've ever seen, looks brand new honestly, drives nice. Very strange indeed.

The seller is lying. Proceed as such.

yeah there’s something fishy going on.

5 granny’s in a row? No way.

if it was a 1 owner I’d go- OK makes sense and move on.

My Montego was a granny car and only has 60k original miles on it. Yes, original miles and it’s a 1968. But it went from Granny - to grandson- to the guy I bought it from. and it stopped being a normal everyday car 30 years ago and was the Granny’s until about 1999-2000 when she passed away.

That taurus has been active non stop, I can almost gaurantee it. Maybe it rolled the 999,999 odometer? LOL

Now I just want to know what this guy is trying to pull, we're not talking about much money here.

OK.

For the record, if I had a car roll a million miles and then do another 50k I’d be dancing and telling everyone lol

I don’t know if I would trust that MotoSnoop. I ran my own vehicles a 2002 Wrangler and a 2015 GTI. The wrangler came back with 4 calculated owners even though I’ve owned it since new but I guess they come to that figure with the manufacturer being the first owner, followed by the dealer, lienholder, then finally me. My GTI came back with one owner though, I think it may just have problems with older vehicles.

I have access to the Texas DMV database, ran a search looks like it’s currently registered to a couple in Austin, before then it says to have come from Ohio so look out for rust. I deal a lot of cars and without looking at this one if everything looks operable I would ballpark it at $800-$1000 bucks if you’re looking to purchase for your personal use and not curbstone. top end if it all appears to be good, low end if it needs brakes, tires, fluids, or any basic maintenance performed.

Motosnoop says my Dodge Dynasty is a seven-owner car, when I’m the confirmed third owner, and have all the paperwork from new to prove it... I’m going to take them with a grain of salt.

Edit: I’m really going to mistrust them, now. They don’t even show three of the titling events my Mazda has had (all with me as owner, admittedly), much less the registrations in three different states.

Motosnoop directly pulls from the service AutoCheck - which many, many dealers use. The main reason for using it is that it’s free.

Carfax and AutoCheck commonly get the amount of owners wrong or over inflated. For example, if you lease a brand new car, then buy it at the end of the lease both systems read that as 2 owners. Another example, my dad bought a truck brand new when I was a kid, but titled it through his business. He sold the business and had the truck retitled in his name after about 10 years. Then it looked like a 2 owner truck.

All of these scenarios over inflate it. You always take Carfax or AutoCheck with a grain of salt. The problem is in the reporting to their system and sometimes they way the system handles the information (like my 2 examples above).
